College Football Notes: Tommie Frazier among coaches headed to Iraq

OKLAHOMA CITY — Former Nebraska quarterback Tommie Frazier is among the former college football stars lined up for a flag-football game in Iraq.

The Salute to The Troops is being staged by the USO, and it will feature teams of former college stars and military personnel. The teams will be led by former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer and former Clemson coach Tommy Bowden.

The game is to be played at a U.S. base on a date still unannounced. The time and location are being kept secret for security purposes.

Highlights of the game are to be shown on television during halftime of the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 4.

KU's Briscoe to turn pro

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe said Friday he will forgo his senior season at Kansas and enter the NFL draft.

Briscoe finished his three-year career as Kansas' all-time leader with 3,240 yards receiving. The 6-foot-3 junior's 219 receptions were seven behind teammate Kerry Meier for the school record, and his 31 touchdown receptions eclipsed the school mark.

Briscoe said his decision was not affected by the Thursday night resignation of coach Mark Mangino, who reached a financial settlement with the university following an investigation into alleged verbal abuse of players.

Notre Dame passes on bowl game

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Notre Dame football season is officially over.

Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick announced Friday that the school has decided against going to a bowl game with a 6-6 record, citing “unique circumstances.” He didn't elaborate, but Swarbrick fired coach Charlie Weis after five seasons earlier this week, and the search for a replacement is under way.

Swarbrick said he reached the decision after meetings with assistant coaches and team leaders.

Fired assistants won't coach bowl

ATHENS, Ga. — Defensive coordinator Willie Martinez and two other Georgia assistants fired by coach Mark Richt this week have declined the invitation to coach in the Bulldogs' bowl game.

Coach Mark Richt says Martinez, defensive ends coach Jon Fabris and linebackers coach John Jancek decided that they will not remain with the team.

Also, Georgia defensive end Montez Robinson was suspended indefinitely from the team Friday following his arrest Thursday on charges involving two altercations with a female student.
