The 14th annual Governor's Lecture in the Humanities on Nov. 4 at Joslyn Art Museum helped kick off the 2009 National Humanities Conference in Omaha.
The Nebraska Humanities Council hosted the conference, which was in Nebraska for the first time.
A pre-lecture benefit dinner in the Joslyn Atrium raised $138,000 to support the council's statewide programs.
The diners were joined by other Nebraskans attending the conference for the free public lecture.
Gov. Dave Heineman introduced Matt Miller, who talked about the ideas in his new book, “The Tyranny of Dead Ideas.” Omahan Richard Holland was awarded the Nebraska Humanities Council's Sower Award in honor of his commitment to the humanities.
The lecture was sponsored by the University of Nebraska and Valmont Industries. Chairwomen were Melissa Marvin and Angenette Meaney.
