Inspiration, delight at a theater near you
Big-name actors for the adults and animated frogs for the kids. Opening Friday at movie theaters: Director Clint Eastwood’s “Invictus” tells how newly elected South African President Nelson Mandela used the sport of rugby to unify a racially divided nation. Matt Damon co-stars. Meanwhile, “The Princess and the Frog” brings hand-drawn animated features back to Disney.
Flobots ride to town on their ‘Handlebars’
They can tell you about Leif Ericson, keep rhythm with no metronome, lead the nation with a microphone and ride their bikes with no handlebars. They are the Flobots, one of the latest bands to cross rap with alternative rock, and the lyrics above are from their tune “Handlebars.” Catch them Wednesday night at the Waiting Room.
Troupe to perform a final ‘Nutcracker’
It’s last call for the Sugar Plum Fairy. Omaha Theater Ballet presents its final performance of “The Imperial Nutcracker” this afternoon at the Orpheum Theater. The troupe will disband at the end of its season in February.
Cabaret duo stars former Phantom
Now he’s the Phantom of the 1200 Club. Vocalist Gary Mauer came to fame singing the title role of Broadway’s “The Phantom of the Opera” opposite his real-life wife, Elizabeth Southard. The duo will perform in Omaha on Friday, a cabaret-style show at the Holland Performing Art Center’s Scott Recital Hall.
Live without ‘Glee’? Music can ease pain
Prepare to weep, “Glee” fans. The Fox musical dramedy will go on a four-month hiatus after Wednesday night’s episode. But there is some good news. The second volume of the show’s soundtrack comes out Tuesday, so you’ll have something to listen to during the extended break.
Music for Dogg lovers, parrot heads
Looking for some more mature tunes? Check out “Buffet Hotel” by Jimmy Buffett or Snoop Dogg’s “Malice N Wonderland.” Those albums also come out Tuesday.
Movies bring magic, merriment, menace
Clear your schedule for movie viewing. Three big-time films hit video store shelves Tuesday. “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” easily takes the No. 1 spot after raking in $300 million at the box office. “Julie & Julia” follows an aspiring cook and a world-renowned chef. And Johnny Depp plays John Dillinger in “Public Enemies.”
Looking back at grunge’s heyday
He captured the grunge movement with his lens. Now Michael Lavine is sharing his photos in a book called “Grunge.” Lavine shot grunge-era bands for his job as a photographer at Sub Pop Records. The book is $25.
