It's been a memorable fall for Brian Prusa.
The 18-year-old senior nabbed a big buck on the opening morning of the deer rifle season and then quarterbacked Howells to a state football championship.
“They were both pretty exciting,'' Prusa said. “It was a good fall, all right.''
The teen has been going hunting with his dad, Jim, as long as he can remember. He used grandfather Leonard Prusa's rifle on land that his great-great-grandfather homesteaded in 1876.
“He's a lefty. He's retired from hunting and I get to use it because I'm left-handed too, so that's pretty cool,'' Prusa said.
The deer was standing at 75 yards and dropped less than 50 yards from where the original sod house was built.
It rough-scored 142, was 19¾ inside the rack and measured 12½ on the G2 tines. It was the biggest taken from the family farm south of Howells.
