Open house to honor Cancer Society chief
Dr. Alan Thorson, president of the American Cancer Society, will be honored at an open house Thursday.
It will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the American Cancer Society office, 9850 Nicholas St. The event is open to the public. Beverages and light hors d’oeuvres will be served.
Thorson, who officially took his post in November, is a clinical professor of surgery at both Creighton University and the University of Nebraska, and a nationally recognized colon and rectal surgeon serving as program director for Colon and Rectal Surgery at CU.
Breakfast helps small businesses mingle
Small Business Owners can network with one another and meet potential large businesses, government service providers and buyers by attending Friday’s Omaha Empowerment Breakfast.
It will be from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at Regency Lodge, 909 S. 107th Ave.
The program is produced by the U.S. Small Business Administration in cooperation with 30 government and private organizations from the community.
Cost is $14. Registration is required by Wednesday and may be made on line at www.omahaempowermentbreakfast.org.
Deadline is Friday for overseas military mail
You have until Friday to send holiday mail going to military overseas APO/FPO locations for arrival by Christmas. The deadlines for Afghanistan or Iraq already passed, however.
Except for military mail going to Iraq and Afghanistan, Express Mail also can be used to mail packages to other overseas military locations until Dec. 18.
Here are other USPS non-Express Mail holiday deadlines:
Friday for Mexico, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the Pacific Rim; Dec. 21 for all U.S. locations.
All-day challenge set for Camp Cedars
Boy Scouts, Venturers and Learning for Life/Explorer members can face a personal challenge at an all-day Saturday event.
A teen COPE course and bonfire will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Camp Cedars at Cedar Bluffs, Neb. Lunch and snacks are included in the $30 fee. COPE stands for Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience.

Join Sierra Club walk in Fontenelle Forest
A hike in brisk air can refresh during this often-hectic season.
The Sierra Club will guide a 2½-hour hike at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fontenelle Forest in Bellevue. Meet at 1 p.m. at the Gilbert M. and Martha H. Hitchcock Wetlands Learning Center parking lot, 103 Camp Gifford Road in Bellevue.
Hiking will be on easy to moderate trails, at a fairly quick pace. There is a Sierra Club Outing fee of $1 per person, paid to the hike leader.
