COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — The City Council has voted against allowing alcohol in the council chambers in Columbus.
The local chamber of commerce wanted to hold an after-hours event in the chambers, in partnership with the city. But it needed the council to amend city code to add the council chambers to the list of city properties where liquor could be served.
The others are the fire stations and the library, with council permission.
But when city administrator Joseph Mangiamelli submitted the proposed change, he asked the council to amend it to move next week’s event to the lower level level of the library. He said he’d gotten resistance to the idea of liquor in the council chambers.
So on a 7-1 vote, the council approved allowing the event in the library’s lower level.
