    FOOTBALL NOTES

    Huskers are back at practice

LINCOLN — Nebraska held its first full football practice Saturday since the Big 12 championship game, working out for 90 minutes inside the Hawks Center.

The Huskers had only done some conditioning this week before having a brief workout Thursday. NU coach Bo Pelini said the team will practice again today, then likely Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday next week.

Pelini is trying to balance some work with time off as Nebraska (9-4) prepares for the Dec. 30 Holiday Bowl.

“I have my feelings on it, and I like the recipe that we've come up with,'' he said. “It is Christmas time, and we have a lot of kids that come from a distance to play here, and I try to give them a little block of time so they can go home and enjoy their family. You've got to work through finals, work through the holiday, but you've also got a game to prepare for.''

After next week, Pelini said, players will be free before reporting back on Christmas Eve. The team leaves Christmas Day for San Diego. Workouts will be available for those who remain on campus.

Pelini said the focus was good Saturday.

“Our kids know when they come out here at practice that it's time to go to work,'' he said. “We don't have a problem with that.''

Big offensive changes hard for bowl, Bo says

Wondering if NU will use the time before the Holiday Bowl to look at what it's doing or whom it's using on offense? Pelini offered few hints.

“We're just going to keep progressing and keep working to get better at the things we're doing, and getting our execution better,'' Pelini said. “Obviously for the offseason we'll probably do some things that are a little different, but it's hard in this amount of time.''

At quarterback, starter Zac Lee and No. 2 Cody Green have been rotating with Latravis Washington and the other backups. Whether it leads to more playing time, Green said he is definitely looking at this as an important time.

“They really haven't said too much about what's going to happen,'' said Green, a freshman who started two games before Lee regained his job as No. 1. “But anytime there's a long period of time before a game and a lot of practices, you feel like that's something that you can improve on. You can help out and just say, ‘You know what, I can go out here and show 'em what I got for these two or three weeks,' and really just get your chance.''

    Travel schedule leaves Bo bushed

Forgive Pelini if he is dragging a little. Since returning from Dallas last weekend, the head coach said, he has gone from Charlotte to Ohio and back to Lincoln, then from San Diego to Orlando and back to Lincoln.

After practice Saturday, Pelini was leaving with the defensive staff for New York and the Heisman Trophy ceremony involving NU senior Ndamukong Suh.

Pelini said he's not much for flying, and the travel is costing him some recruiting time. But he has wanted to be with Suh as much as possible on the awards trail.

“It's important that Suh's represented and really that the university is represented at these things,'' Pelini said.

“It's just been fun. He's accomplished a lot. He's getting recognized, and I think it's been great for our program.''

Pelini said he mostly has read while in the air. On Saturday's trip he planned to watch some film.

“I usually read until I fall asleep,'' he said. “I haven't gotten a lot of sleep, so sometimes I end up slobbering all over a book.''

    Football writers honor Suh

Suh was named a first-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. Other Big 12 picks were Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma State offensive lineman Russell Okung and Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and safety Earl Thomas.

Threat is found on Suh fan Facebook page

A threat against a Dallas student has been found on a Facebook fan page for Suh.

Kevin Janse of the Dallas police says the threat was reported to Lincoln police, who notified authorities there.

Janse says officers interviewed the student Friday at Jesuit College Preparatory School and deemed the threat not credible. No charges will be filed.
