Man held in fatal stabbing

Fighting words turned into deadly actions early Saturday at a Council Bluffs house party.

Dustin J. Jones, 23, of Council Bluffs was fatally stabbed at the party at 609 S. Eighth St. Police later arrested Terrance J. Burnett, 20, also of the Bluffs.

Sgt. Dave Dawson of the Council Bluffs Police Department said a fight broke out about 2:30 a.m. when Burnett took exception to something Jones said about one of the females at the party.

Dawson said Burnett pulled a knife and stabbed Jones once in the stomach. Jones made it out of the house, but apparently nobody went to check on him because they were trying to calm a “very agitated” Burnett, said Dawson.

No one called police, Dawson said.

About two hours later, a witness to the fight called Jones’ home to check on him but found that he had not come home. That witness then told Jones’ parents, Peggy and Joseph Jones, about the fight and a search was started.

Jones’ mother discovered his body in the 700 block of Sixth Avenue, about a block and half from the party, Dawson said.

“I can’t imagine how terrible that must have been for her,” Dawson said.

Police were called. Burnett was found about 7 p.m. Saturday at his father’s home, where he was arrested without incident, said Dawson.

Burnett was in the Pottawattamie County Jail, booked on suspicion of first-degree murder. The county attorney will determine whether any other charges are warranted, Dawson said.

Burnett also is facing sentencing in Pottawattamie County District Court on an unrelated charge of possessing a .45-caliber handgun.
