If you want to guarantee your loved ones receive warnings about sudden, severe weather, now's a good time to add a weather radio to your holiday shopping list. You don't have to, but you can, spend a lot. Prices range from about $20 upward.
Some things to look for. 1) A tone alarm that sounds when a warning is issued - even if the radio is turned off. This is important because dangerous storms can strike while people sleep, such as June 2008 tornadoes in the Millard area; 2.) S.A.M.E. functionality, which allows you to localize the area and type of notices you receive; 3) battery backup.
