KEARNEY, Neb. — University of Nebraska at Kearney senior baseball players Blake Cover and Jared Loschen have been tabbed preseason All-Americans by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
The association's Division II national poll voters and members of the association's board of directors selected this preseason All-American team.
Cover, from Kearney Catholic, was a second-team pick at third base who will actually play shortstop this spring. He batted .393 last year with eight home runs and 51 RBIs. He needs 65 hits this spring to break Travis Kerkman's school record of 252.
Loschen, from Kearney High School, is an honorable mention selection. He is 18-11 in his career and on pace to challenge UNK records for wins (22) and starts (41) by a pitcher.
Both Cover (3.84 GPA) and Loschen (3.87 GPA) are successful in the classroom as well, with Cover earning academic all-district honors last spring and Loschen recently being admitted into the dental school at Nebraska.
“Obviously, we're very proud of Blake and Jared. I think this is a testament to the development each of them has made the past three years. They have worked hard and bought into our program and are now considered to be among the top players in Division II in 2010,” UNK coach Damon Day said.
