Several graduation ceremonies Friday

More than 945 students will graduate Friday during the University of Nebraska at Omaha's winter commencement ceremony at 2 p.m. at the Civic Auditorium, 1804 Capitol Ave.

Deborah Smith-Howell, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean for graduate studies, will receive the chancellor's medal. Lori Hogan, co-founder of Home Instead Senior Care with her husband, Paul, will receive the alumnus achievement award.

At the University of Nebraska at Kearney graduation ceremony Friday, 440 winter graduates will receive diplomas at 10 a.m. in the UNK Health and Sports Center. Nancy A. Keegan, chairwoman of the University of Nebraska Foundation board of directors, will give the commencement address.

Wayne State College will confer 197 degrees at 2 p.m. Friday in Rice Auditorium. Wayne Kehrli of Omaha will receive the Wayne State Foundation alumni achievement award.

Kehrli retired from Mutual of Omaha Bank and had been president of Nebraska State Bank, which was sold to Mutual of Omaha. He and his wife, Nancy, serve as trustees of the Wayne State Foundation.

Chadron State College's commencement ceremony for 183 graduates will be at 5 p.m. Friday in Armstrong Gymnasium. Alumnus Randy Bauer of Chadron will speak.

Bauer, a past distinguished alumni award winner and former chairman of the Chadron State Foundation board, is part of the leadership team for Vision 2011, the foundation's fundraising campaign.

Diaper drive set for this weekend

Nobbies will have a disposable diaper drive Friday through Sunday to benefit the Open Door Mission's Lydia House. Both Nobbies locations — 120th Street and West Center Road in Omaha and 42nd Street and Nebraska Highway 370 in Bellevue — are participating.

Diapers can be donated from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Nobbies also will donate 5 percent of all sales made those days to Lydia House.

Wymore coffee event to celebrate Christmas

The Wymore (Neb.) Area Community Coffee will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday by the Welsh Heritage Center as part of its annual Christmas celebration.

Trails, roads open to hunters only

A deer hunt Saturday and Sunday at DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge near Missouri Valley, Iowa, will close the roads and nature trails in the refuge to nonhunters.

The visitors center will remain open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and wildlife films will be shown.

The hunt is being held to control the number of deer at the refuge.
