2:58 p.m.: Linebacker Chris Williams has left the Nebraska football team, NU confirmed this afternoon. The true freshman from Abilene, Texas, ranked arguably as the top recruit in the Huskers' 2009 signing class.
A Parade All-American last year and the large-class Texas high school player of the year as a junior in 2007, Williams' career at Nebraska never got untracked after he suffered a serious knee injury in the 10th game of his senior year.
He underwent surgery nearly a year ago but did not progress properly through rehabilitation. He was held off the Huskers' 105-man roster for preseason camp in August and did not practice this fall.
“I know he's been very, very frustrated with the rehab part of it,” Abilene High School coach Steve Warren said today.
Warren said he believed Williams was scheduled to return to Abilene on Wednesday but that he had not talked with Williams about his decision to leave the Huskers.
Williams could not be reached for comment.
