Report: Neb. highways in jeopardy

LINCOLN (AP) — A new report says Nebraska’s highway system will fall into disrepair and not be expanded unless more money is made available.

The report was released by the Legislature’s Transportation and Telecommunications Committee, It says the state’s heavy reliance on the fuel tax to generate dollars for highways has presented the state with a “fiscal crisis.”

After federal-stimulus dollars dry up, the Department of Roads expects the amount available for road construction will tumble to $300 million, which is $90 million less than what was available two years ago.

At the same time, construction costs are rising.

The report does not offer recommendations, but outlines 31 tax and fee hikes that Nebraskans suggested during a series of public hearings.
