LINCOLN (AP) — People will have to pay four-tenths of a cent more in Nebraska fuel taxes, starting Jan. 1.
The Department of Revenue says the fuel tax will go to 26.8 cents a gallon because of changes in variable portions.
One variable is based on the wholesale price of fuel, the other varies based on a formula aimed at maintaining steady funding for roads, but no more than budgeted by the Legislature.
The wholesale variable is going down 1 cent because wholesale fuel prices have dropped.
The other variable rate will go up by 1.4 cents per gallon. Roads Department controller Steve Maraman says the increase will make up for the loss from the wholesale tax and will offset lower-than-expected revenue from sales taxes and other fees.
