LINCOLN -- A federal disaster declaration has been approved for seven Nebraska counties hit by winter storms in mid-November, Gov. Heineman said Thursday.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency will make funding available to state and eligible local governments on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and repairs to facilities damaged in Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Nemaha, Pawnee, Richardson, and Thayer counties.
Federal funding also is available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures for all counties and tribes within the state.
Heineman issued a formal state disaster declaration Nov. 19 to help state agencies assist with recovery and damage assessment efforts.
“These storms produced high winds and heavy wet snow that resulted in an estimated $3.6 million in damages,” said Al Berndt, assistant director of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency.
