Board rejects outdoor graduation

SHENANDOAH — Traditionally, weather permitting, Shenandoah High School’s commencement has been outside at Mustang Field.

That will no longer be the case after the school board decided to remove the option for an outside graduation, despite a petition signed by more than 200 high school students requesting that option.

“Commencement at the football field is also a tradition,” the student letter read. “The procession of the class around the track and across the field toward our friends and families is a big part of our celebration.”

The vote on keeping graduation at the football field as an option failed on a tie vote.

Board members LeRoy Heatherington and Tim Johnson voted for the proposal, while Dwight Mayer and Brian Maxine voted against it. The fifth board member, Bill Sons, was absent.

Mayer and Maxine said convenience, parking and accessibility for the handicapped are concerns with having commencement at the football field.
