Tree restriction is recommended

SHENANDOAH — The Shenandoah Tree Board has recommended that the City Council ban planting trees along the city’s parking strips, which are the areas between the sidewalk and the curb.

Trees along the parking strip are the property owner’s responsibility until the tree dies of natural causes, when it becomes the city’s responsibility.

Tree Board member Jerry Josephson said he and fellow board members Dennis McDermott, Derry Wolford and Marv Adcock drove Shenandoah’s streets and compiled a list of trees and stumps that need to be removed.

Josephson recommended the city pay for tree removal or charge a 50-cent surcharge on water bills to pay for the cost of removal.

“There are some (trees) that are real concerns — some that are real issues, others that are borderline ... some of them maybe can be put on the back burner for six months, eight months, 12 months,” Josephson said. — World-Herald News Service
