Sean M. Heyenga

Cop in court - as the suspect

An Omaha police officer appeared in court this afternoon, accused of trying to strangle his wife.

Sean M. Heyenga, 40, was ordered held on $20,000 bail. He would have to post 10 percent -- or $2,000 -- to be released pending trial. Heyenga requested a public defender, saying he could not afford to hire a lawyer.

Heyenga was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence strangulation just after 11:30 p.m. Thursay at his home near 63rd and Blondo Streets.

The Douglas County Attorney's office reviewed reports related to the case and filed the domestic assault charge, as well as a terroristic threats charge.

His wife reported that she had been assaulted by Heyenga, who has been with the department since June 2008.

He has been placed on administrative leave pending a criminal and internal investigation.
