Lofte to host acting workshop for youths

The Lofte Community Theatre will offer a day of acting workshops for young people ages 10-18 at all levels of experience, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at the theater, just east of Manley, Neb.

Free popcorn for ‘Wonderful Life’

Film Streams, Omaha’s nonprofit art house movie theater, is offering a small free popcorn for those who buy tickets to see “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

The classic 1946 Frank Capra film, starring Jimmy Stewart, runs Dec. 25-31 at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater, 14th and Mike Fahey (formerly Webster) Streets. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 for members. Visit the box office or buy online at www.filmstreams.org

New name for Adelines reflects group’s style

The Sweet Adelines women’s singing group is changing its name next month to Acappella Women’s Chorus, reflecting its style of harmonizing without accompanying instruments.

The group also is searching for a new rehearsal site that can accommodate the use and storage of risers for 45 women. Sweet Adelines had been practicing at Unity Church on North 90th Street.

Omahan’s ‘Temptation’ to play Chicago theater

“Into Temptation,” a movie directed and written by Omaha native Patrick Coyle, has been booked for at least a two-week run at the Gene Siskel Film Center in downtown Chicago over the Christmas holiday.

The small-budget independent movie, which stars Jeremy Sisto as a young priest and Kristin Chenoweth as a troubled penitent, played Omaha for almost three months this fall.

Bemis Underground gets new manager

Local artist and gallery curator Brigitte McQueen has been named manager of the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts Underground Gallery.

McQueen will begin her new job early next year. She’s currently owner and curator of Pulp Gallery in the Old Market. That gallery will close at the end of the month. Matthew Carlson’s exhibit, which was scheduled to open at Pulp, will now open next year at the Underground Gallery.

Serbian pianist to join Omaha School of Music

Pianist Boban Martic has joined the faculty of the Omaha School of Music.

Martic, a native of Belgrade, Serbia, holds a doctorate in piano performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. While there, he served as pianist Mark Clinton’s studio assistant, the highest teaching responsibility given to a doctoral student. Martic has performed in master classes for such renowned pianists as Claude Frank and Paul Gulda.
