Ed agency chief approved

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Lane Plugge will be the chief administrator for the newly created Green Hills Area Education Agency.

The board of directors approved his appointment Monday . His three-year contract begins July 1. Salary for the first year will be $180,000 plus benefits.

Plugge has been superintendent of the Iowa City Public School District since 1999, and his prior experience includes seven years as superintendent of the Grand Island Public Schools and two years as superintendent of the Fairbury Public Schools, both in Nebraska.

The Green Hills AEA, created by the merger of AEA 13 and AEA 14, covers 15 counties and will include 51 school districts. AEAs are support agencies created by the Iowa legislature in 1974 to provide equitable educational opportunities for Iowa children. They are regional agencies providing service and support to local school systems.

Green Hills AEA will serve 44,000 students and 3,900 teachers and administrators. Regional offices are located in Atlantic, Council Bluffs, Glenwood, Harlan, Missouri Valley and Red Oak as well as other locations.

Earlier this year, Plugge was named Iowa superintendent of the year by the School Administrators of Iowa, and in 1995 he was given the distinguished alumni award by the College of Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

He earned his bachelor’s degree at Dana College, a master’s degree at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and his doctor of philosophy degree at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Plugge’s mother and other relatives live in Omaha, where Plugge grew up. His children and grandchildren live in Lincoln.
