LINCOLN — A Papillion hike-bike trail project and more historic street lights in downtown Fremont are among the projects recently approved by the Nebraska Department of Roads for $5.6 million in federal funding.
The City of Papillion was awarded $284,018 to build a concrete connector trail from the Savanna Shores Trail to the existing hike-bike trail around Walnut Creek Lake.
Fremont will receive $140,210 for the third phase of a project to replace historic street lights in the downtown area. Fremont is also getting $477,999 to build a connector trail along Rawhide Creek to extend from the Johnson Road Trail on the east side of town.
Wayne, Norfolk, Wakefield, Beatrice, Hastings, Grand Island and Lincoln were among the other recipients.
The Transportation Enhancement Program is part of the federal highway bill, and typically requires communities to provide a 20 percent to 30 percent match in local funds. The program funds projects such as scenic byways, restoration of historic transportation facilities, and facilities for non-motorized travel, like hike-bike trails.
