A mobile home fire in Schuyler, Neb., on Christmas morning killed two people.
Details this weekend were scant. Names, ages and sex of the victims, and even the address of the mobile home, were not available.
An investigation is ongoing, but a state fire marshal investigator said there was no evidence of criminal activity.
Jan Zurcher, emergency service director for the Columbus-based Prairie Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, said a family lived in the trailer home. There were survivors, but she did not have details.
“I think they are still trying to come to grips with everything,” Zurcher said.
Todd Parsons, chief of the Schuyler Volunteer Fire Department, said the blaze was reported at 4:06 a.m. The first firefighter on the scene reported the structure fully engulfed.
High winds from the north fanned the flames as firefighters worked to put out the blaze.
Because the incident was under investigation, Parsons referred further questions to Colfax County Attorney Francis Botelho. He could not be reached for comment Saturday night.
Brad Sloup, one of two fire marshal investigators looking into the fire, said autopsies would be performed.
Family members had been notified of the deaths, but the names of the victims will not be released until Monday.
The fire has been described elsewhere as an explosion, but Sloup and Parsons said they could not confirm that an explosion actually occurred.
