PARTY PLANNERS: Members of the Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church eighth-grade confirmation class hosted a Christmas party this month for the women and children at the Open Door Mission.

Activities included decorating cookies, making gingerbread houses and crafts.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Hy-Vee Supermarkets and the congregation helped with donations of money and food for the party and tolietries for the women.

Organizers reported that all the children had a great time being creative with the frosting.

WISDOM CIRCLES FORMING: “Wisdom Circles” will be starting in January at the Servite Center of Compassion, operated by the Servants of Mary at 74th Street and Military Avenue.

The circles offer time out from busy schedules to join a group of women doing a variety of crafts. All are welcome to join. There is no fee, but a free-will offering is taken.

Day circles meet from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month, January through June. Evening circles meet from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

GOSPEL MUSIC PERFORMANCE: The Dixie Melody Boys Quartet will appear at a free concert on Jan. 3 at Piedmont Park Church, 4801 A St. The old-time gospel quartet will begin performing at 6:30 p.m.; doors will open at 5:30 p.m. A free-will offering will be taken.

COMBINED SERVICE: Pilgrim Baptist Church, Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Pleasant Green Baptist Church and Zion Baptist Church are combining for a Family Night/Watch Night Service on New Year’s Eve.

Beginning at 6 p.m., there will be food and a variety of games and activities for all ages at Pilgrim Baptist, 2501 Hamilton St. The worship service will begin at 10 p.m. with a combined choir. All are welcome.
