Foundation honors top 4-H leaders

Eight Nebraska 4-H leaders were honored this month by the Nebraska 4-H Foundation at the Nebraska Farm Bureau's annual convention.

The Farm Bureau established the award with the Nebraska 4-H Foundation in 2003 to recognize individuals among the more than 11,000 adult 4-H volunteer leaders in Nebraska.

The Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes 4-H leaders with fewer than 10 years of service; the Lifetime Volunteer of the Year Award honors those with 10 or more years.

Jean and Pat Stewart of Ashland received the Lifetime Volunteer of the Year Award. The Stewarts have led the Platte Valley Wranglers 4-H Club for more than 40 years and have not missed a county fair.

Honorable mention went to Ann Tepley of Loup City and Lisa Eggerling of Milford. Tepley has been involved in 4-H in Valley and Sherman Counties for 27 years. Eggerling has been involved in Seward County 4-H for 15 years.

Cheryl Escritt of Pleasanton, who is in her ninth year as a 4-H volunteer, received the Volunteer of the Year Award. She has been involved in almost all aspects of the Buffalo County 4-H program, including being a club leader, serving on committees and completing certification training in archery and shooting sports.

Honorable mention was awarded to Vicky Cowan of Beatrice and Jonathan and Delinda Mohrmann of Deshler. Cowan has been a volunteer leader for six years in Gage County. Jonathan and Delinda Mohrmann started as 4-H leaders eight years ago when they took over the oldest active 4-H club in Thayer County, the Deshler Willing Hands 4-H Club, and increased both membership and frequency of meetings.

The Stewarts and Escritt will represent Nebraska in the competition for the National Salute to Excellence awards.
