Timeline of the 2000s

Jan. 22, 2003: The first episode of Dave Chappelle’s sketch comedy show “Chappelle’s Show” airs on Comedy Central. After three seasons, Chappelle unexpectedly quits and becomes an enigma.

March 18: Dan Brown releases mega-popular novel “The Da Vinci Code.” In 2006, a movie based on the book and starring Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou is released.

August: Social-networking-meets-battle-of-the-bands site MySpace launches.

OutKast releases “Hey Ya!,” a single off its double-album “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.” It becomes the anthem of the decade, but André 3000 and Big Boi haven’t been able to recapture the magic since.

Nov. 2: “Arrested Development” premieres on Fox. Its three-season run remains influential to TV today (and launched Michael Cera’s career), but the sitcom never had the ratings to survive.

Nov. 14: Jay-Z releases his curtain-call record, “The Black Album,” ending his career on top — and then unretires. Twice.

Feb. 1, 2004: While on stage with Justin Timberlake during the Super Bowl halftime show, singer Janet Jackson loses part of her outfit, introducing the phrase “wardrobe malfunction” to the lexicon.
