COUNCIL BLUFFS -- State road crews are assisting Pottawattamie County in clearing rural roads, where snow drifts have been reported as high as 18 feet.
Jeff Theulen, the county's emergency management coordinator, said the Board of Supervisors on Monday declared the county a "local disaster area'' to allow for state snow removal resources on rural roads.
"Since the declaration, Iowa Department of Transportation resources are now being used by the county engineer to assist in opening rural roads in the county," Theulen said. "These efforts will continue until the county engineer believes all residences in Pottawattamie County have been accessed."
Theulen said it is crucial for all 14 volunteer fire and rescue departments in the county to have access to residences in case of an emergency.
