COLUMBUS, Neb. -- A low unemployment rate and large manufacturing sector contributed to Platte County being named by editors of Money Magazine as No. 3 in the 10 “Best Places for Jobs” in the country.
Earlier this year, Columbus was listed among the Top 100 “Best Small Towns” to live in America by CNNMoney.com and its 99th rank put the area in contention for the jobs recognition.
According to the CNNMoney.com article, the area's 4 percent unemployment rate is enviable when compared to the national average of 10 percent.
A large, diversified manufacturing base and the attraction and support of new businesses were major factors contributing to Platte County's position on the list, with specific mention of Becton Dickinson, Behlen Mfg. Co. Inc. and Archer Daniels Midland being made in the article.
David Bell, co-chairman of the Columbus Economic Development Council, said the diversification of industries in the Columbus area and attracting new businesses have placed the community in a position to weather economic storms and provide greater stability and continuity for the local work force.
