Auditions set for Shakespeare plays

The Nebraska Shakespeare Festival plans a return to two plays over three weekends next summer, said Kim Mickelsen, co-chairwoman of its board of trustees.

Mickelsen said early inquiries gave promise of reaching fundraising goals, and the board approved a two-show budget last month.

The festival had cut back to one show over two weekends last year, for the first time in its 23-year history, because of fund-raising difficulties spurred by the recession.

A rock-musical version of “Two Gentlemen of Verona,” the festival’s first full musical, will open June 24. “Romeo and Juliet” bows a week later, closing July 11.

The festival will open a week later than usual to avoid the final College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium.

Auditions will be held for a festival cast of 12 men and six women. For professional actors, auditions will be Feb. 16-18 in New York, Feb. 14 in Milwaukee, and Jan. 30 and 31 in Omaha.

To reserve a slot or for more information, e-mail production director Thomas Lowe at tlowe@nebraskashakespeare.com or visit the festival Web site, www.nebraskashakespeare.com.

Film Streams to screen children’s film festival

Film Streams, Omaha’s nonprofit arthouse movie theater, soon will begin showing the best of the New York International Children’s Film Festival on its screens at the Ruth Sokolof Theater, 14th and Mike Fahey (formerly Webster) Streets.

Starting Saturday and finishing March 18, Film Streams will show one live-action feature and four animation programs, all part of its Forever Young family and children’s series.
