GILTNER, Neb. -- A Giltner farmer has announced his campaign for the Legislature's District 34 seat held by state Sen. Annette Dubas of Fullerton.

Brandon Hunnicutt said his top priorities as a senator would be maintaining the health of agriculture and encouraging new business through lower taxes.

"If you want to bring businesses in, you can't tax them to death," Hunnicutt said.

Hunnicutt, who has not yet filed for office, announced his campaign Monday in a news release from the Nebraska Republican Party. He is involved in several agricultural organizations, serving as president of the Nebraska Corn Growers Association and past president of the Nebraska Agriculture Technologies Association.

He is also a member of the Nebraska Farm Bureau, Nebraska Soybean Association and Nebraska Independent Crop Consultant Association.

Hunnicutt, 36, is a fourth-generation farmer northwest of Giltner, and he said he's interested in encouraging the development of renewable sources of energy, such as corn ethanol and corn stover, possibly through incentives.

Dubas, a Fullerton farmer who was elected in 2006, announced she was running for re-election in August.

The 34th District consists of Hamilton, Merrick, Nance and parts of Polk and Hall counties, including the cities of Aurora, Central City, Doniphan, Fullerton, Genoa and much of rural Grand Island.
