2 more suits over Beatrice center

BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — Lawsuits have been filed on behalf of two residents of the Beatrice State Developmental Center who died after being moved under state order to other facilities.

The estates of Claudia Wright and Sara Schnell are suing Gov. Dave Heineman and other officials, saying the state allowed the center for the developmentally disabled to become unsafe.

Wright had lived at the center for 27 years; Schnell for 53 years. They were among 47 “medically fragile” residents moved from the center last year over concerns about adequate care.

The lawsuits seek a jury trial and unspecified damages.

The state Attorney General’s Office did not have an immediate comment.

In May, a similar lawsuit was filed against the state on behalf of six Beatrice center residents.
