LINCOLN (AP) — A state senator wants to extend provisions of a 2001 law that bans racial profiling by law enforcement officers.
Law enforcement agencies statewide would be required to continue to collect data until 2014 about traffic stops in the state and the characteristics of the people involved. The bill was introduced Wednesday by Sen. Robert Giese of South Sioux City.
The original law required the collection through Jan. 1 of this year. It also called on police agencies to develop a system for receiving complaints about racial profiling. Like the original law, Giese’s bill doesn’t provide penalties for violators.
Twenty-two allegations of racial profiling were reported to the state in 2008, the latest year available.
