LINCOLN (AP) — Five people wrongly convicted in the 1985 killing of a Beatrice woman are preparing to sue the state, seeking compensation for the decades they spent in prison.
That comes after the Nebraska State Claims Board denied on Tuesday their claims seeking $500,000 each.
DNA testing conducted last year cleared Thomas Winslow, JoAnn Taylor, Kathy Gonzalez, James Dean, Joseph White and another person in the rape and murder of Helen Wilson.
A lawyer representing four members of the group says the claims board's denial is routine. The five have six months to reach settlements or file lawsuits.
The same five have filed federal lawsuits against Gage County, where they were prosecuted. Those lawsuits are pending.
