One breakfast, two mayors
The second annual Neighborhood Center Mayor's Breakfast on Jan. 21 will feature Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle and Council Bluffs Mayor Tom Hanafan.
The breakfast will run from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Scott Conference Center, 6510 Pine St. This year's theme is “Two Cities ... One Community.”
Tickets, $25, are available at the Neighborhood Center office at 561-7581 in Omaha or in Council Bluffs at 402-290-0545. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Fund for Neighborhood Development, which will eventually support neighborhood initiatives through a grant process.

Sarpy Y to host family fun night
Bring the family to a free Family Extravaganza and Winter Festival on Friday at the Sarpy Community YMCA, 1111 E. First St., in Papillion.
From 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., enjoy swimming, a space bouncer and an obstacle course and games. A meal of a hot dog, chips and a drink will cost $2.
Parents must accompany children. No more than four children per adult.
Workshop part of Mentoring Month
There's no fee to attend a Jan. 21 daylong workshop for those involved in mentoring in the Omaha metro area.
The event at the Holiday Inn, 72nd and Grover Streets, is part of National Mentoring Month. Renee Spencer of Boston University, a nationally recognized expert in the field of mentoring, will be the keynote speaker.

Art, music tonight in Olde Towne
Tonight will bring Thursday Nights In Olde Towne in Bellevue.
There will be live music featuring Acoustic Roots from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 119 W. Mission Ave. An area artist will be featured. The event is free.
Participating businesses will be open until 8 p.m.
Get lined up for a contra dance
Dancers of all ages and abilities, singles and families are welcome at ContraDance Omaha's 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday dance at the Seymour Elementary School gym, 4900 S. 79th St., in Ralston.
Contra dances have patterns similar to square dances but are done in long lines. All dances are taught and called to live music from Rivertown String Band and Friends.
The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for students and children older than 12.
Free talk offered on rheumatoid arthritis
The Arthritis Center of Nebraska in Lincoln will have a free informational talk, “Around the Bend with Rheumatoid Arthritis,” Jan. 21. The event is part of the Knowledge Night Learning Series.
Dr. Melvin Churchill, a board certified rheumatologist, will discuss how rheumatoid arthritis patients can stay active and flexible during a Nebraska winter. The seminar will begin at 7 p.m., in the second floor conference room of the Pine Lake Medical Plaza building, 3901 Pine Lake Road, in Lincoln.

Eye screenings available this month
Free eye screenings will mark January as Glaucoma Awareness Month for Creighton University's Office of Health Sciences Multicultural and Community Affairs.
The 20-minute screenings will include tests for visual clarity, visual field and intraocular pressure measurement. Appointments are not necessary. For more information, call 280-3964.
The screenings will be offered between 9 a.m. and noon on these dates and at these sites:

‘American Swastika' author to speak
“American Swastika: Danger from the Right” will be the topic of Saturday's 2 p.m. meeting of REASON (Rationalists, Empiricists And Skeptics Of Nebraska).
University of Nebraska at Omaha professor Peter Simi will talk about the book he co-wrote, “American Swastika: Inside the White Power Movement's Hidden Spaces of Hate.”
