Regents name new chairman

LINCOLN -- The University of Nebraska Board of Regents unanimously elected regent Bob Phares of North Platte as its new chairman Friday.

Phares succeeds Kent Schroeder of Kearney, who served as 2009 chairman and presided over the regents' controversial decision to allow the expansion of embryonic stem cell research at University of Nebraska facilities.

Phares, former North Platte mayor, was appointed to the board after former regent David Hergert of Mitchell was impeached. He was elected to the post in 2006.
