The Nebraska AIDS Project is moving to a new location to save money and provide a space better suited for its services, officials with the organization say.
The Omaha office of the statewide program has been at 139 S. 40th St. for about a dozen years. It will move in the next several months to 250 S. 77th St.
Even though it's smaller, the new office will have more private spaces for counseling, said J.J. Replogle, executive director. The testing and other services the organization provides will continue at the new location, she said.
The new location also will be more central for clients spread across the city, she said.
The AIDS Project recently sold the building that houses the current offices and will lease its new office space.
The current office is about 11,000 square feet. The new space offers about 7,000 square feet and will have lower maintenance, utility and insurance costs, said Robert Girthoffer, president of the organization's board.
The organization has looked for ways to reduce costs because of drops in contributions, partly because of the tight economy, Replogle said. The organization eliminated several administrative positions and its free lunch program in 2008.
Several outside organizations stepped forward last fall to provide funding and volunteers to resume the lunch program, she said.
The new location will not have a full kitchen so lunches won't be offered there, Replogle said. But the AIDS Project is working with community groups to find a place to provide lunches for clients, she said.
