How textbook rentals work

>> A student pays a portion of the cover price: 50 percent at Nebraska Bookstore, for example; 45 percent at Follett stores; between 30 percent and 70 percent at CengageBrain.com; and varying percentages at Chegg.com.

>> The rental price is the same whether the book is brand-new or had been rented previously.

>> The student provides a credit card number to the vendor. If the book is not returned in good condition, the student is charged the remainder of the cover price plus, in some cases, a handling fee.

>> Most programs allow a student to convert the book rental into a purchase, without penalty, if the student wishes to keep the book.

>> Chegg.com asks that renters do only minimal highlighting of the text and that they not write in the books.

>> However, some students prefer “prehighlighted” books. Follett’s policy on rentals is similar to that for used books: normal wear-and-tear and highlighting are acceptable.
