Demolition project awarded contract

The Bellevue City Council has awarded a contract for a massive demolition project.

Ten structures and two dwellings are to be destroyed.

Approximately 63,000 square yards of concrete and 45,000 cubic yards of waste materials will be hauled away. Abandoned utilities will be removed.

The city bought the former site of the Wilson Concrete Plant from Coreslab Structures for $1.5 million in 2006. The council awarded the demolition contract Monday to Anderson Excavating Co. of Omaha.

Anderson, one of five companies vying for the project, came in with the low bid of $998,582 and was approved by a unanimous vote.

Demolition at the 27-acre site at the intersection of Fort Crook and Cornhusker Roads is to begin within 10 days, said City Engineer Jeff Roberts. The work will begin with removal of hazardous materials, such as asbestos and mercury. By the end of February, buildings should be coming down, Roberts said.
