Did you know?
One of the state's top basketball players, Evans was getting Division I interest on the hardwood before committing to NU in August. He took a visit to Wichita State and was getting serious interest from Creighton and Nebraska as well. Evans was the homecoming king last fall.
Coachspeak
“He's just so competitive in whatever he does, no matter what it is,” Waverly coach Mike Johnson said. “What we really saw this year over last year was him taking on a leadership role. Tyler didn't have the stats that he had in the past, but he's just the type of kid that (a drop statistically) didn't bother him. They're getting a real good kid.”
The gurus say
Scout.com has him as a three-star prospect at safety, while rivals.com gives him two stars as an athlete and has him as the second-ranked prospect in the state of Nebraska.
About Evans
No highlight tape? No problem. Evans earned his scholarship offer from NU despite not having film of himself playing either of the positions (wide receiver and defensive back) that he was projected for at the next level. Coaches saw enough of him in his one day at a summer camp to offer him a scholarship in early August. He committed the same day.
Our take
After his official visit late last month, Evans said he's going to start out on offense. His speed — Evans was the Class B 100 meter champion — will be better displayed in space at receiver than it was running the wishbone over the past two years.
