MY FIVE

Not his albums. Or any of his awards.

The most important items to Brad Hoshaw, 29, are five other things. And the singer-songwriter thought of a simple way to pick them.

“If my place was burning down, this is what I would grab,” he said.

Just a week ago, Hoshaw and his band, the Seven Deadlies, won three Omaha Entertainment Awards, including Album of the Year and Artist of the Year.

He didn't bring any of the trophies with him, but here's what made his list.

1. Acoustic guitar. Hoshaw found this guitar — a 1963 Gibson V-25 — a few years ago at D-Rocks Music in Papillion. An employee let him test it.

“I took it home that night and wrote ‘Jackie's Bar.'”

2. iPod

“At one point, I had 2,000 CDs. I sold most of them off over the years, but I still have the music on my iPod.”

3. Flask. A gift, the flask originally had an image from the film “Pulp Fiction,” but Hoshaw made it his own by wrapping it in duct tape and slapping on a sticker for Slo-Fidelity Records, a label owned by Omaha musician Kyle Harvey. And for the record, scotch is Hoshaw's favorite thing for filling it.

4. Leather jacket

“It was a gift for Christmas, and the reason I love it is that I wore it every day — even through my toughest days — and it shows the journey I've come on in the last few years.”

5. Notebook. Hoshaw prefers Mead Five Star notebooks. He uses them for everything from lyrics to set lists to storing things such as bar napkins that he uses for inspiration.
