It’s been a big running year for Omaha mom Kimberly Nitchals.
In May, the 36-year-old ran the Lincoln National Guard Half-Marathon, her first ever 13.1-mile race. And in September, she ran her second, the Omaha Half-Marathon.
On Sunday, she’ll double that distance when she runs the ING Miami Marathon.
This 26.2-mile race, though, isn’t just about the running for Nitchals, mom to 7-year-old Holden and 5-year-old Phoebe and wife to husband Chris.
It’s also about giving back.
Nitchals and six others from Omaha are running the race this weekend as part of Team World Vision, a group that participates in races across the country to raise money for the poorest communities all over the world.
All of the money raised for this race will go to World Vision’s Haiti relief and rebuilding efforts.
“World Vision does a great job helping women and children who deal with poverty and disease on a daily basis,” Nitchals said. “We thought it would be cool to go out and run and do something we enjoy and help that situation.”
The seven runners all belong to Covenant Presbyterian Church. They got involved with training for this race as part of Team World Vision at the suggestion of Associate Pastor Graham Baily, Nitchals said.
They began training in October and ran their longest run — 20 miles — three weeks ago.
The runners headed to Miami on Friday. Escaping the Omaha cold and snow is an added bonus, Nitchals said.
So is running by the ocean.
Other members of the group: fellow moms Dawn Melcher, Victoria Creigh and Felicia Tweedy, as well as Baily, Andy Tweedy and Geoff Wrenn.
The group so far has raised $2,100 for World Vision.
