4:10 p.m.: Starting quarterback Zac Lee, still recovering from offseason arm surgery, probably won't be back healthy in time for spring football, coach Bo Pelini said today.
Lee underwent surgery last month to repair a tear to the flexor tendon in his lower right arm. He played with the wrist injury for most of the 2009 season.
But at this point, Pelini said, Lee's rehabilitation may not be completed by the time the Huskers begin practicing again.
“There's a lot of things that could happen there … but I know he won't be there at least for the beginning of spring,” Pelini said.
Here are a few other tidbits regarding the NU team that Pelini shared today:
-- Safety Rickey Thenarse, who suffered a season-ending ACL tear last fall, has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, Pelini said. Thenarse is still recovering from the injury.
-- Pelini said sophomore quarterback Kody Spano is in “great shape” after suffering his second ACL injury in a four-month span last August.
-- Cole Pensick, a Lincoln Northeast graduate who redshirted last year, has made the move from defensive tackle to center during the offseason, according to Pelini.
-- Pelini didn't want to discuss specifics, but he hinted that a few players might not return to the NU squad next fall. He expects to have 84 or 85 players on scholarship by the time the season starts.
