In the end, Ron Coleman couldn't pass up the opportunity to tote the rock.
“I've always liked having the ball in my hands,” the Omaha North senior said.
Coleman, a two-time All-Nebraska player and The World-Herald's boys athlete of the year in 2009, signed Wednesday with Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, a Football Championship Subdivision school, previously known as Division I-AA.
Coleman plans on cutting around 20 pounds to play running back at the next level. The 6-foot, 250-pound Coleman had been primarily looked at as a defensive lineman and linebacker.
Redhawks coach Tony Samuel is a former Husker defensive end and NU assistant coach. He has six assistants with Nebraska ties as well.
“It felt a lot like home there,” Coleman said. “It reminds me a lot of North.”
