Village terminates police services

NORTH PLATTE — The Lincoln County Board reluctantly approved a request on Monday from the Village of Brady to terminate its contract for police services, making it the second community to make such a request this year.

On Jan. 18 the County Board accepted a letter of termination for police services from the Village of Maxwell. At that meeting, Maxwell Clerk Nanette King said the Village Board made cuts across the board to this year’s budget.

“We’ve cut out just about everything we could,” King said at last week’s meeting.

Brady’s request was prompted by the need to come up with extra funds to replace the village’s lagoon system. Board trustee Joe May said cutting police services was one way to free up funds for that project.

County Board member Joe Hewgley reminded the Brady representatives that they are required to provide some type of police services, whether by contracting with the county or by having their own local marshal.

Village Clerk Pam Diehl said officials understand that the county will still have to provide services to Brady since residents pay taxes to the county.

Lincoln County Sheriff Jerome Kramer said that if the agreement with the county is terminated, the Sheriff’s Office will be required to respond only to violations of state statutes.
