Police cited a 36-year-old Omaha woman for child neglect Monday evening after they discovered piles of animal waste, unlicensed animals and little food inside the home she shared with her 13-year-old son.

Officers discovered the "intoxicated and incoherent" suspect inside her home after her brother called police to check the well-being of his sister and nephew, according to a police report. The woman allegedly told police she was drinking with a group of people when someone stole $1,100 in cash from her and left the home.

The son told police his mother was drinking beers and Hennessy with a group of people at the house. His mother purchased the alcohol with some of the $1,325 she recently received from the state. The remainder, he agreed, was stolen.

During the investigation, the report said, police discovered dog feces and animal vomit on the floor. In the basement, police found large amounts of trash and piles of animal waste. The house smelled of garbage and urine, and the only food in the house was a loaf of bread and three sodas.

The son told police he'd sold his DVD player to buy the items. The police report said the mother had a history of mental illness and a "self-confessed drug problem."

The child was taken into protective custody; police photographed the scene, and the mother was cited on suspicion of child neglect.
