Kansas coach Bill Self praised Nebraska's freshmen after Saturday's game. “(Jorge Brian) Diaz has got great touch,'' Self said. “(Christian) Standhardinger is going to be a good player. I think he's just a little raw right now. And (Brandon) Ubel hit a couple 3s, so he can be a threat."

    MEN'S BASKETBALL NOTES

    Self praises Nebraska freshmen

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Patience is an overused word in the vocabulary of Nebraska basketball fans.

But Kansas coach Bill Self recommends a good dose of patience after another up-close look at the Huskers' freshman class.

Forwards Jorge Brian Diaz (20 points, nine rebounds), Christian Standhardinger (eight points, three assists, two steals) and Brandon Ubel (six points, two rebounds) caught Self's eye during KU's 75-64 win.

“Diaz has got great touch,'' Self said. “Standhardinger is going to be a good player. I think he's just a little raw right now. And Ubel hit a couple 3s, so he can be a threat.

“Those are good guys to build around. Historically for Doc (Sadler), it's been harder to get big guys than others. But I think they are pretty good at the 4 and 5 spots.''

Diaz, in two games against KU All-America center Cole Aldrich, has a combined 35 points and 10 rebounds.

“It's a challenge every time you play against a guy like that, an NBA player and an awesome player,'' Diaz said. “I get kind of motivated every time I play someone like him.''

Diaz was thinking upset when Nebraska took a 43-39 lead.

“We wanted to win,'' he said. “We did not come here just to play. But we did not make things happen. We did not execute like we were supposed to at the end of the game.''

    Anderson reaches 1,000-point mark

Forward Ryan Anderson became the 25th Husker to score 1,000 points in a career when he swished a 3-pointer on NU's first possession.

“I guess that's a great accomplishment in some people's eyes,'' the senior from Seattle said. “But I would trade it for 1,000 wins.

“I guess it's good to score 1,000 points. I'm just trying to help my team the best way I can shooting the ball. I've been blessed to reach that.''

Lots of Texas talk at KU

Kansas guard Sherron Collins said the Jayhawks' focus against Nebraska wasn't helped by all the talk around campus about Monday's game at No. 9 Texas.

“I've had a lot of people who didn't even know we played today,'' he said. “Most people were just telling us good luck on Monday.

“Everyone looks past (the Nebraska game). But of course we look forward to the Texas game, too. It is one of those games that we circle on the schedule.''
