Scouts mark 100th anniversary

The Boy Scouts of America's Mid-America Council marked the 100th anniversary of the founding of Boys Scouts Monday night.

Between 150 and 300 Scouts were expected at the celebration, which featured cake, drawings, and visits from Omaha mayor Jim Suttle, as well as the mayors of Ralston, Papillion and LaVista.

Although scouts across the country have been celebrating the centennial throughout the year, Monday's event was special because it marked the actual 100-year anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts, said Katie Godbout, spokeswoman for the Mid-America Council.

“Today is the actual day,” she said Monday.

“We have a theme, it's ‘Celebrating the Adventure, Continuing the Journey.' So it's a look back at the past, but also a look forward into scouting for the future,” she said.

A “birthday party” will be held all week at the Durham Scout Center's Gottschalk Scout Shop.

“There's cake and ice cream and punch in there,” Godbout said.

The events won't end there, either.

Tuesday, scouts will gather at the Durham Museum to explore the scouting exhibit that's on display through May 30.

Saturday, the scouts will join the American Red Cross for a “100 Pints for 100 Years of Scouting” blood drive at the Durham Scout Center.

The Durham Scout Center is at 12401 West Maple Road.
