Eight cars and two semi-tractor trailers were involved in a chain reaction accident this morning on Interstate 80, but almost miraculously, no one was seriously hurt, according to Deb Collins, spokeswoman for the Nebraska State Patrol
The accident report indicates that a car spun out of control, hit a bridge abutment and then came to rest blocking the Interstate, Collins said. Then, one after another, the other vehicles began colliding into each other or veering off the highway.
The accident occurred at about 9:40 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-80 near Greenwood.
Three people were taken to BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln, where they were treated and released, Collins said. Another person was driven by private vehicle to an Omaha hospital, but Collins said the patrol has no information on that person's possible injuries.
Weather may have been a factor. Collins said that winds were strong at the time and that blowing snow had reduced visibility.
Another accident farther west, near Beaver Crossing, did leave a semi driver with a broken leg. In that accident, also on I-80, a truck driver went off the highway, across the median and collided with an on-coming semi, which then hit a car parked along the Interstate.
Three people were taken to the hospital, including two people in the parked car. They were treated and released. The driver of the second semi, however, suffered a broken leg.
