AURORA — Shirley Lueth, a longtime Grand Island Independent columnist and the author of four books, has died. She was 79 years old.

Lueth passed away at Hamilton Manor on Monday morning, her family said.

Lueth — known for her wit, humor and wisdom — began writing for the Aurora News-Register before starting a weekly column for the Independent in 1978. She wrote her column — titled “Prayer and Peanut Butter” — for the Independent for a quarter of a century, discontinuing it in 2003.

Lueth’s syndicated columns also appeared in newspapers across the country.
