DAVID CITY — The deadline is approaching for David City voters to decide whether their east-central Nebraska community should retain its two-officer police department.
Ballots for a special mail-in election are due by 5 p.m. today.
The Butler County Sheriff’s Office has been helping the department with patrols in the community of 2,500 since Police Chief Steve Sunday and another officer resigned late last year.
City Clerk Joan Kovar said Sunday’s resignation came as the council was determining whether it would reappoint him to the position.
The county has offered the city a contract for police services, at an annual cost of $240,000.
For 2009-10, city officials budgeted $414,000 to operate and maintain the department. — AP
