COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Six people were taken to hospitals after a two-vehicle wreck near the intersection of Veterans Memorial Highway and South Expressway shortly after 7 p.m. Monday.
Susan Smolinski, 55, of Council Bluffs told officers she was facing westbound at the intersection waiting for the light to turn green. She said the light turned green and she proceeded.
Reports indicated Smolinski then turned her head and noticed a 1998 Plymouth Neon approaching the intersection from the north. The cars collided.
The Neon driver, Caleb Williams, 19, of Council Bluffs had to be removed from his vehicle by Council Bluffs Fire and Rescue. Reports stated Bobbi Flynn, 17, of Council Bluffs, was a passenger in Williams' vehicle. She allegedly told police that after the light turned red, Williams said, “I can't stop, hold on, I can't stop.”
Flynn said after the collision, the Neon hit the curb and rolled one time before coming to rest on its wheels.
Medics transported Williams to Creighton University Medical Center with critical injuries. Smolinski was taken to Alegent Health Mercy Hospital, and two children in her vehicle were transported to Creighton with “possible” injuries.
Flynn and Bailey Schovanec, 17, of Council Bluffs, both passengers in Williams’ vehicle were taken to Alegent Health Mercy Hospital with minor injuries.
No citations were issued and the wreck remains under investigation.
